This is a self-discovery program that encourages participants to take control of their own learning and utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY. If you have questions, contact Jane Healy.
What is required?
A pretest. (The link will be emailed to you in your introductory email.)
The completion of five lessons (more info below)
A post-test. The link will be emailed to you when you have completed your five lessons.
How do I access the electronic resources?
Inside your school or library you should have direct click-and-go access to all the resources listed here. At home, you can access all the resources except AncestryLibrary and CAMIO with a public library database card, a SD State Library e-card or a school database barcode and password. Request a State Library e-card for your personal use.
If you have questions about access, contact Jane Healy.
Who can participate in the challenge?
We offer a version of the Challenge at least annually. This Challenge is specifically for Library Institute students. Other Challenges, when offered, are open to the following:
-South Dakota academic, public, and school library and teaching staff regardless of position and status (full and part time, certified and paraprofessional).
-SD public library trustees, Friends, and Library Foundation members.
-South Dakota state employees
If you are not a staff member of a South Dakota school or library, you are welcome to follow along.
How is the Electronic Resource Challenge Institute Edition different from the Electronic Resources Challenge?
The Challenge Institute Edition allows more personal choice and is offered over a shorter time period. For the Challenge Institute Edition, you will choose five of the ten lessons to complete over a five-week period. The regular edition is offered over a period of ten weeks and all ten lessons are required. Lessons for the Challenge Institute Edition are submitted via email to Jane Healy. Please put CHALLENGE--LESSON (and the lesson number) in your subject line. All ten lessons are available at once, allowing you to complete the Challenge when it fits your schedule. Comments will not be made on individual lessons, so if you have questions, please submit them via email.
The E-Resources Challenge: Institute Edition offers lots of options so that you can make the discoveries that are most relevant to you. Take advantage of this opportunity to dig deeper, try new things, and apply what you are learning!
How long do I have to complete the E-Resources Challenge: Institute Edition and how much time will it take?
The E-Resources Challenge: Institute Edition will begin November 16, 2015 and end December 21, 2015. All lessons will be available on November 16, 2015. Since this is a self-directed learning program, you decide how much time you need to complete the lessons. Some participants may choose to devote one hour per week; it can be broken up into 15 minutes a day. Library Directors are encouraged to give staff work time to complete the program. Participants who do the program at home or on their own time may elect to spend more time with the lessons.
How do I track my progress for the Electronic Resources Challenge Lite?
All participants will submit lessons via email to Jane Healy. You may want to save your completed lessons in a Word document for later reference.
Will there be any training classes offered to show staff how to do this?
Electronic Resources training for public, school and academic libraries and in-services for school staffs is available and can be scheduled with Jane Healy.
Many of the vendors provide free webinars, as listed on the State Library training calendar.
What if I need help? Who can I call?
Please contact Jane Healy.
Will I receive Continuing Education (CE) Contact Hours for this?
Yes. You will earn 5 continuing education contact hours, which can be used toward public librarian certification. An explanation of how CE Contact Hours can be used for teacher certification is available here.
