The South Dakota Library Challenge: Electronic Resources Edition was developed by the South Dakota State Library staff to introduce you to the statewide subscription electronic resources. The Electronic Resources Challenge encourages library staff to learn more about the resources that provide expanded access to information and research tools to all schools, libraries and citizens of South Dakota. It is your chance to Explore...Discover...Play!...and Learn about the statewide subscription resources and how they can be useful to you both personally and in your library. This is an opportunity for you to learn at a pace that is comfortable for you and to share your learning experience with your colleagues in the South Dakota library community.

Institute Edition: Lesson 2b--World Book Online Public Library Edition

World Book Public Library Edition

World Book Public Library edition offers three different sections.

1. World Book Online for Kids (grades K-5)
2. World Book Online Info Finder (grades 5-9)
3. World Book Online Reference Center (grades 9-adult)

Created for public libraries, World Book Public Library edition contains games, research tools, life skills information and more.

Designed for grades K-5, World Book Online for Kids provides easy-to-read articles, interactive games, science project ideas, and activities. Other features include the World of Animals and Maps and More. An overview describing content and features is available.  The SD State Library provides a two page handout.

World Book Online Info Finder is designed for grades 5-9. This resource provides longer articles, plus research tools like citation builder and timelines. Other components include links to newspaper webpages and virtual tours to museums, historical sites and unusual places. An overview of content and features is available. The SD State Library also provides a two page handout.

World Book Online Reference Center is for grades 9 through adult. Useful features include computer and web tutorials and life skills articles along with links to government resources. An overview of content and features is available.  The SD State Library provides a two page handout.

Discovery Exercise assignment for Institute participants, please choose, explore and report on 2 questions under Basic and 2 questions under AdvancedEmail your responses to Jane Healy. Please put CHALLENGE--LESSON (and the lesson number) in your subject line. Please put the question number before your response.

Basic Discovery Exercise:
Discuss and report answers to the following questions and other observations you have about World Book Public Library Edition. All the resources are linked on the State Library homepage and can be accessed via this alphabetical list.

1. Using World Book Online Kids, search for information on a mammal of your choice. Find a picture and information about its habitat.

2. Using World Book Online Info Finder, search for information on the same mammal you searched in World Book Kids and compare the amount of information.

3. Using World Book Online Reference Center, search for a country. Notice the types of information available on the left and right side bars of the first results screen. Click on the link for your desired country, and again notice the types of information on the left and right side bars of the screen. What types of information will be most valuable to your patrons?

Advanced Discovery Exercise:
1. Using World Book Online Kids, go into one of the following special features: "World of Animals," "Science Projects," "Maps and More," "Games" or "Activities." Report your findings and mention ways you or your patrons could use these at your library.

2. Using World Book Online InfoFinder, go into one of the following special features: "World Book Explores Virtual Tours," "Interactive Earth," or one of the Research Tools that are new to you. Report your findings and mention ways you could use these with your patrons.

3. Using World Book Online Reference Center, go to the Online Book Archive (under Research Tools on the left side of the home page). Feel free to browse for ebooks, but please look up either Jane Austen's Emma or Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Note the special tools available and the Related Information. How might this be useful for your patrons?
