The South Dakota Library Challenge: Electronic Resources Edition was developed by the South Dakota State Library staff to introduce you to the statewide subscription electronic resources. The Electronic Resources Challenge encourages library staff to learn more about the resources that provide expanded access to information and research tools to all schools, libraries and citizens of South Dakota. It is your chance to Explore...Discover...Play!...and Learn about the statewide subscription resources and how they can be useful to you both personally and in your library. This is an opportunity for you to learn at a pace that is comfortable for you and to share your learning experience with your colleagues in the South Dakota library community.

Institute Edition: Lesson 2a--World Book Online School Edition

World Book School Edition
World Book School Edition offers four different sections.

1. World Book Kids (grades K-5)
2. World Book Student (grades 5-9)
3. World Book Advanced (grades 9-12 +)
4. World Book Discover (grades 4-adult) (differentiated learning resource for English as a Second Language students, reluctant readers, Adult Language Learners, etc.)

World Book Kids' kid-friendly interface encourages pointing and clicking to find information. It contains pictures, videos and short, easy-to-read articles. Other features include games and teacher resources. An overview of content and features is available. The SD State Library also provides a 2 page handout.

World Book Student contains longer articles and more features, such as a citation creator, "My Research" and timelines. The self-paced tutorial describes those features and more.   The SD State Library provides a 2 page handout.

World Book Advanced provides high school and college aged researchers access to encyclopedia content plus primary source documents and e-books. Users can create accounts to save research and create timelines. The self-paced tutorial explains the features and content. The SD State Library provides a 2 page handout.

World Book Discover is aimed at differentiated learners (especially students with reading difficulties). Discover offers something for everyone to like. Its simple, succinct encyclopedia articles include comprehension questions. The Visual Dictionary, Life Skills Center, World Book Explains videos and browsable topics make Discover a multi-media knowledge shop. The self-paced tutorial explains features and content.  The SD State Library provides a 2 page handout.



World Book Kids offers mini-lesson plans for teachers in the "For Grownups" section of the Activities (bottom of screen). World Book Student, Advanced and Discover align articles with SD Content Standards. See them by doing a search, viewing results, clicking the "Related Information" tab, and clicking "Content Standards." Student and Advanced have an "Educators' Tools" section. Look for the link at the bottom of the screen. This page provides curriculum correlations, graphic organizers, and links to professional information and lesson plans. Discover offers curriculum correlations in "For Educators" on the bottom left of the home page.

Basic Discovery Exercise:
Discuss and report answers to the following questions and other observations you have about World Book School Edition. All the resources are linked on the State Library homepage and can be accessed via this alphabetical list

1. Using World Book Kids, search for information on a mammal of your choice. Find a picture and information about its habitat.



2. Using World Book Student, search for information on the same mammal you searched in World Book Kids and compare the amount of information.



3. Using World Book Advanced, search for a country. Notice the types of information available at the top of the of the first results screen. Click on the link for your desired country, and again notice the types of information on the left side bar of the screen. What types of information will be most valuable to your patrons or students?

4. Using World Book Discover, use the browse function on the right side of the screen to find an article about American government. Notice the features on the article page. How will World Book Discover help your patrons or students who are not good readers of English?


Advanced Discovery Exercise:
1. Using World Book Kids, go into one of the following special features: "World of Animals," "Science Projects," "Maps and More," “Compare Places,” or "Games," or "Activities." Report your findings and mention ways you or your students could use these.

2. Using World Book Student, go into one of the special features under the "Take me to" tab (upper right of the home page) or one of the Research Tools that are new to you. Report your findings and mention ways you could use these with your students.

3. Using World Book Advanced, go to the Online Book Archive (under "Research Tools" on the home page). Feel free to browse for ebooks, but please look up either Andersen's Fairy Tales or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Note the special tools available and the Related Information. How might this be useful for your students?

4. Using World Book Discover, go into the special features under “Reference Tools” (left side of the home page) and explore. Which ones would best suit your students and why?

Common Core Connections
In Lesson 2A, choose the World Book School Edition module that best fits the age of the students you work with. Spend some time exploring article and special feature content. Consider how you would use this resource to meet a Common Core standard (Common Core State Standards information is found on this page. Current SD School Library Content Standards are here.)

In your report, name the standard and briefly and specifically describe the lesson you will teach using World Book to help meet the standard.
