The South Dakota Library Challenge: Electronic Resources Edition was developed by the South Dakota State Library staff to introduce you to the statewide subscription electronic resources. The Electronic Resources Challenge encourages library staff to learn more about the resources that provide expanded access to information and research tools to all schools, libraries and citizens of South Dakota. It is your chance to Explore...Discover...Play!...and Learn about the statewide subscription resources and how they can be useful to you both personally and in your library. This is an opportunity for you to learn at a pace that is comfortable for you and to share your learning experience with your colleagues in the South Dakota library community.

Institute Edition: Lesson 2--World Book Online--Encyclopedias and More

Welcome to the Electronic Resources Challenge! Lesson 1 focuses on World Book. All the resources are linked on the State Library homepage and can be accessed via this alphabetical list. Scroll down to the World Book edition you are interested in. (You should have direct click-and-go access inside your library and at home access via SDLN member library card, school database barcode and password, or State Library e-card. Check out the FAQ if you have access questions.)

 World Book Online provides online encyclopedia access and much more. World Book offers different interfaces for varying age levels and library types, making it the one resource that can be successfully used by kids and adults. World Book Online also helps make research fun by providing additional features, such as videos and sounds. Even better, great features support all kinds of learning styles, such as a read aloud option for all articles and e-books in the English and Spanish language versions.

 World Book has three online editions--school, public library and foreign language. The school and public library editions supply levels for different age and reading abilities. You can easily switch between editions by clicking the "World Book Products" link at the bottom of any World Book screen.

 Spend some time exploring the edition that you would find useful for your library or classroom. Institute participants, for the purposes of credit, you only need to do the Discovery Exercise assignment for ONE of the editions below.
