Institute Edition: Lesson 2c--World Book Online Foreign Language Edition

World Book Foreign Language edition consists of Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos, the Spanish language version, and L'Encyclopedie Decouverte, the French language version. Both encyclopedias are based on World Book's Student Discovery Encyclopedia and are appropriate for younger native speakers and older students and adults who are learning a second language.

Both sites have simple navigation, easy-to-read articles, a visual dictionary and more.

An overview of content and features in Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos is available. Please try the Spanish language article read aloud feature, not mentioned in the overview.  The SD State Library also provides a 2 page handout.

Basic Discovery Exercise:
Discuss and report answers to the following questions and other observations you have about World Book Foreign Language Edition.  All resources can be accessed via this alphabetical list.

1.  Check out the visual dictionary in either language and look for an animal.  Discuss how this could be used in your library.

2.  In the Spanish language encyclopedia, Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos, look up an article and listen to it being read aloud.  How could this feature be useful for your library?

Advanced Discovery Exercise:

1. Explore the two ways to search: 1) typing a term in the search box, and 2) using the browse. Choose a World Book Foreign Language edition. Choose a search term of your own or search for the word for "house"--"casa" in Spanish, "maison" in French. First, type the term into the search box. What are the results like? What extra information is in the sidebars?

Second, go back to the module's home page. In addition to the search box, notice boxes with images. This is the browse feature, which allows you to click until you get to the desired result. Use the browse feature to find the same search term that you used for #1. Describe that process and report your findings for both types of search in your report.

2. When would it be better to use the search box? When would it be better to use the browse feature? Report  your answers.
